May is over, time for an update

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

The month of may is over. It was a good month in many ways. I’ve taken some fairly big steps in improving myself and doing things I’ve always meant to do. I’m currently enrolled to attend a technical college in the fall. Its looking good, and it looks like with financial aid I’ll be able to cover most the cost of attending.

As usual for my progression posts, I’ve posted new pictures of myself on my progression page. You can find the link on the right under “navigation”. I posted a disclaimer, but I’ll say it again here. I don’t dress up for my photos. You get me how I am that day.

My ankle is doing much better. I’ll always have pain there, I have for years, but as I lose weight, it gets better. I was told by my brother that I limp much less now then I used to. Which I never did much to begin, but even less is good. I feel a lot more “fit” then I have in the past. I enjoy doing my cardio, working up a sweat. I kinda feel like a new person in that regard. I used to despise that “work out” feeling.

I’ve started doing some HIIT on the exercise bike. I like it I think, and I’d like to incorporate some running/sprinting HIIT in the future. Just something to work towards.

So goals…

May Goals

Get to 295 lbs, losing my 2nd 10% of my body weight - I got to 298, close, but not quite. Still good though.

Be able to jog 1 mile - Did this one. Well before the end of the month.

Incorporate some stretching/yoga into my weekly routine - I’ve been stretching more, but no Yoga.

Do more body weight training - I’ve been doing push-ups and planks mostly

Stay smoke and soda free - Done and Done

June Goals

Get to 280 lbs

Time my mile jog and get to 12 minutes if its longer

Be able to do 10 military push-ups

Start working on pull/chin ups

First, I just want to say “WOOT, I hit the 40 lbs under mark this week”.

I’ve also started to notice a difference when I look at myself in the mirror, which is a huge deal in keeping me motivated. Everyone around me also seems to be cheering me on, which is great. I still have to smack myself once in a while when I eat more then I really want to for dinner, but I’m managing to keep myself at or under 1500 calories a day, at least that’s what my rudimentary math is telling me. I don’t nit pick every little thing, I just try to eat small portions and more healthy. It seems to be working thus far.

I’ve been doing a 15 minute work out thing every day. I also walk for an hour on a treadmill mon thru fri and plan on walking outside when the weather improves some. Have to love Wisconsin winters that don’t want to go away. I may also get a bike for a bit of change. This week I added a weight training routine on mon/wed/fri after I do my cardio. Having never seriously lifted weights except when forced too in high school…it was kinda rough getting started. I did some research and picked out what I want to do to target my different muscle groups. I was not prepared for how I felt afterwards. It was a good feeling though, I know I had worked out my body in a way that was good for it.

Why did I add weight training? For many reasons. I’ve always wanted to be tone and have a nice build. I’ve always wanted to have that strength that comes from it. I know that it will help how I feel in the long run. I’m also trying to work on not losing my lean muscle mass from dieting. I know that being on a LCD I won’t really gain any muscle mass, but I can strengthen what I have and work to keep it, so that the ratio of fat to muscle in my body improves. This is all to try to be sure I don’t have large amounts of excess skin with the weight loss. That’s important to me. As much as I know I enjoy feeling better because of the weight loss, I also want to look better.

I mentioned goals, so I thought I would cover some of them.

Short term goals(by the end of April)

I’d like to apologize to anyone who visits the web site. I am aware of how much I fail. I also know its been an eon since I updated the site last. I will try to update more frequently, in fact, I’m going to. Setting my mind to it now, which amazingly in the last couple months has been effective at many things.

So, for the real substance. I’ve been making some life changes and how I live it. Its been a month now without a cigarette or caffeine/soda. I don’t miss either most the time. The first couple days were a little difficult, as I quit both at the same time. A little drastic perhaps, but I felt the need to do so.

I’ve also started a diet and exercise plan. Its amazing really how the human body works. Its perfectly happy when your sloth and stuffing it full of food. It doesn’t even complain a bit as you harm yourself like that. Then when you start pushing it physically it responds in the other direction, I can feel the change. I have more energy, I feel better, both physically and mentally. Its kinda impressive.

I’m keeping motivated, upping what I’m doing a little every week. I have some large goals set for myself. Maybe I’ll share them in the near future. We’ll see.

Oh and yes Forest, I’m stealing your idea a little, but you basically got it from other people anyway. ;)
